It was just another Tuesday, nothing special on the rise
While America lie peaceful, a fire blazed her skies
In a moment it was over, but a shock went through the earth
In the horror of the rubble, a new spirit had been birthed

As we stood shoulder to shoulder from each corner of the land
We forgot about our differences to lend a helping hand
Amid the tears and sadness at the valiant lost that day
The SPIRIT OF AMERICA reminded us to pray

CHORUS:      Like the Phoenix from the ashes we’re not afraid to fly
We’ll sing God Bless the whole wide world and raise our                             voices high
And we’ll rally every nation till fear and hatred cease
Let the SPIRIT OF AMERICA light the way for peace

Dear God did we war on brothers in blindness to our greed
And turn away from sisters and children in their need
Please forgive our indiscretions and heal us in our plight
And protect our sons and daughters as they try to make it right

We are learning that Armageddon is not fought on land or sea
But the battle between mind and heart that plagues humanity
Minds in fear lead us to anger, to vengeance and to war
Help us open heart to not become the evil we deplore

CHORUS:      Like the Phoenix from the ashes, we’re not afraid to fly
We’ll sing God Bless the whole wide world and raise                                 our voices high
And we’ll rally every nation till fear and hatred cease
Let the SPIRIT OF AMERICA light the way for peace

What was once seen as disaster pushed us all to turn the page
As the SPIRIT OF AMERICA drummed in the golden age
We stepped up to the challenge and erased each boundary line
To create a global family where love and kindness shine

CHORUS:     Like the Phoenix from the ashes, we’re not afraid to fly
We’ll sing God Bless the whole wide world and raise                                 our voices high
And we’ll rally every nation till fear and hatred cease
Bless the SPIRIT OF AMERICA that brought us to                                     world peace

The Story Behind Spirit of America

A Revelation from the Ashes

9/11/01 found me and my friends on a spiritual journey in France, praying at the foot of the very spot where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake.  As we left the church courtyard, humbled by the experience and went back to our hotel there was a large TV in the lobby.

Everyone motioned to us to turn and when we did, we watched in horror as two planes smashed into the Twin Towers of my beloved hometown, New York City.

Since all planes were grounded, it took almost another week before we could get a flight home from London to Chicago.  No flights were landing in New York from foreign shores.  On the 727 connection from Chicago to LGA, there were only six terrified passengers in the entire cabin including me.

As the fear of another attack grabbed all of us, my thoughts raced to the impending sight of my hometown in ruins and the unknown fate of my sister-in-law who worked across the street from the Towers at the World Finance Center.  I broke down and began to cry.

In an effort to make sense of the senseless, I asked the flight attendant to give me a pen.  I grabbed a napkin and began to write, "It was just another Tuesday..." which was actually my first working title to the song.

Obstacles - No One Could Listen

I wanted so much to say something profound.  Something that would help us all heal and move forward as a people and as a prominent world leader. It took a couple of months for me to collect my thoughts and record the song.

Unfortunately, our radio stations were heavily influenced by government policy at the time and refused to air any of the thousands of songs that had been submitted.  My friends at a local station in Tampa said that the word had come down from the mountain that no musical interpretations of the event were to be aired.  “War” was the word of the day and that was that.

Frustrated at the brick walls I was trying to climb, I decided the Universe had a different plan and it wasn't time for Spirit of America to be released. I gently inconspicuously tucked it into our album Messages and decided to wait for the right time to release it.

The Time is Now

I have held it close to my heart for the last seven years until I felt the time had arrived when my fellow countrymen could really hear what it has to say and use it as the tool it was intended to be - an instrument for self-evaluation, the awakening of our minds to higher truths and the healing of our souls, our bodies and our spirits.

More than ever before in history we need to find our identity in the world. Which one will it continue to be - "American War Mongers" or "American Peace Makers?" Only you can decide but before you make that decision, I would like to offer a little information.

Remember how afraid we were that the computers would all crash on January 1, 2000?  Well one of the reasons why they didn't is because the actuaries finally told us that 1/1/2000 was actually 1/1/2003. We had already passed the deadline because our present Roman calendar has been off by three years and that attempts at extra days for leap years hadn't straightened it out. Therefore 2008 is actually 2011.

Why is this important?  Well according to the Mayan calendar and many other spiritual traditions, the so-called end of times would take place in 2011 (this year - can it get any worse?) and 2012 would start the Golden Age, also called the Second Coming, the New Age or the 2,500 Years of Peace.  If the actuaries are right, the Golden Age starts this coming January.

I would ask you to ask yourself only one question during this very important presidential election.  Not which man has the best qualifications for the office of the presidency but of the two candidates, which soul do you think is evolved enough to lead America and the world into the promised 2,500 years of peace? Then vote your conscience.

We cannot have real prosperity until we have peace and we can't have peace in the world until there is peace in our hearts.  Peace begins within us then spreads from our hearts to our families, our streets, our communities, our cities, our states, our nation and then finally the world.

Today, I still stand behind every word of Spirit of America.  It is my inspirational contribution to our country, to you, your family and your friends.
